Job Description Summary

This recruitment is to fill immediate openings as a DMS tutor for MAT0104 classes and to establish a pool for future vacancies. This version of the intermediate level algebra course is taught in a modular format. The modules provide mastery of rational expressions and equations; the study of expressions and equations involving radicals and rational exponents; complex numbers, solving and graphing quadratic equations; understanding of exponential and logarithmic functions; exploring functions and their graphs; using a graphing calculator to solve equations.

Minimum Qualifications
  1. Completion of college algebra (MAT 1350) or higher at an accredited college or university with a grade of “A” or “B”.
  2. Ability to clearly explain mathematics concepts.
  3. Ability to work well with people.
  4. Willingness to work patiently with students who are having difficulty understanding mathematics concepts and mastering mathematics skills.
  5. Familiarity with use of the TI-83/83+/84 graphing calculator (or willingness to learn how to use these graphing calculators.)
  6. Familiarity with the use of web based mathematics assessment and learning programs (or willingness to learn to use these types of programs).
Criteria

CRITERIA: The following criteria, which are not the sole criteria used in the final hiring decision, will be used to review the applications of those persons who meet the stated minimum qualifications and to select those qualified applicants who will be interviewed. Other information and observations made during the interview process may be considered in the selection process. Please ensure that your application and attached documents address the criteria listed below:

  1. Extent and quality of all college-level mathematics course work.
  2. Experience working with faculty and students in mathematics learning support/tutoring environments.
  3. Demonstrated ability and willingness to work cooperatively in a team environment.
  4. Ability to explain mathematics concepts accurately and clearly.
  5. Flexibility in understanding and accommodating students’ learning needs.
  6. Experience tutoring students in prealgebra, elementary algebra and intermediate algebra.
  7. Experience using technology (calculators, computers, and computer software) to support mathematics learning.
  8. Preference to work with instructors as a member of an instructional team or to work more independently with individual students.
  9. Experience using the EducoSoft software system in particular, as well as other mathematics assessment and learning software systems.
  10. Effective interpersonal communication skills.
  11. Demonstrated dependability and patience.
  12. Willingness to participate in staff development.
